VA Benefits by Discharge Status

General Discharge (Under Honorable Conditions)

Most VA benefits available; GI Bill (Chapter 33) is barred.

A General Discharge "Under Honorable Conditions" reflects satisfactory service with some periodic flaws (minor disciplinary issues, performance shortcomings). Most VA benefits remain available, but the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) is BARRED — this is the most significant restriction.

✓ Eligible for

  • VA disability compensation
  • VA healthcare enrollment
  • VA home loan
  • VA pension
  • Burial benefits
  • Most state veteran benefits

✗ NOT Eligible for

  • Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) — BARRED
  • Some specialized federal hiring preferences

Notes

The Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30) and VR&E (Chapter 31) ARE available under General. Only Chapter 33 Post-9/11 is barred.
