County Veterans Service Officers (CVSOs) are usually county government employees; some states use state or regional veterans service officers instead, and not every county has its own office. Why CVSOs first
- Free. Public employees; accredited service officers cannot charge you for VA claim help.
- Accredited. Once you appoint one (VA Form 21-22), they can file claims and talk to VA for you.
- Local. They know your state's veteran benefits, such as property-tax exemptions, as well as federal VA benefits.
- Holistic. CVSOs also assist with housing referrals, employment, and survivor benefits — not just claims.
