VSO representatives provide free assistance. Accredited attorneys and claims agents may charge for representation after VA issues an initial decision, subject to VA fee and appointment rules. Verify the accreditation and scope of anyone you appoint. The right representative depends on your circumstances; this directory does not guarantee outcomes.

How VA fee rules protect you
- No fee for preparing or filing an initial VA benefits claim before VA's initial decision.
- Direct payment by VA is limited to 20% of past-due benefits under a qualifying agreement. Other arrangements must be reasonable; 33.3% is not an absolute fee cap.
- Fee-agreement filing requirements depend on the payment arrangement. Read VA's fee-agreement guidance; the accreditation lookup does not verify your fee agreement.
- If you've been scammed by an unaccredited "claim shark," report to VA OGC and your state attorney general.
