VA Medical Centers (VAMCs) are the primary hubs of the VA healthcare system — providing inpatient surgery, specialty care (oncology, cardiology, polytrauma, SCI), mental health, and emergency services. Most cities have one parent VAMC plus several Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) feeding into it.
Quality varies by VAMC. Check the VA SAIL (Strategic Analytics for Improvement and Learning) report for your local VAMC's ranking before choosing primary care. Community Care eligibility (private providers paid by VA) is available if your VAMC has long waits or is far away.
Eligibility
Enrollment in VA healthcare (Form 10-10EZ) required for routine care.
Emergency care: VA pays for emergency care at any hospital if enrolled and condition was service-connected or life-threatening.
