How to get a veteran license plate (proof of service for everyday display)

Step-by-step guide to obtaining a state-issued veteran license plate. Most states offer free or low-cost veteran license plates ranging from generic "Veteran" plates to era-specific (Vietnam, Gulf War, Post-9/11) and award-specific (Purple Heart, Bronze Star, etc.). 4 steps via your state DMV.

What you'll need

  • DD-214 (proof of service)
  • State drivers license
  • Vehicle registration documents
  • Optional: VA disability rating (for disabled-veteran plates)
  • Optional: Award documentation (for Purple Heart, Bronze Star, etc.)

Step-by-step

Step 1: Find your state's veteran plate options

Every state has a different program. Search "[your state] veteran license plate" or visit your state DMV website. Common categories: generic "Veteran" plate (often free), era-specific (Vietnam, Korea, Gulf War, OEF/OIF/OND), branch-specific (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Space Force, National Guard), award-specific (Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Silver Star, Medal of Honor), Disabled Veteran (often with parking privileges).

Step 2: Gather required documentation

Required: DD-214 (proves service). For era-specific: deployment records or DD-214 dates. For award-specific: certificate or DD-214 entry showing the award. For Disabled Veteran: VA rating decision letter showing service-connected disability rating.

Step 3: Apply at your state DMV

Most states require an in-person visit for the first issuance, then renewal can be by mail or online. Some states (Texas, Florida, California) allow mail-order initial application. Fees vary widely: TX = $3 + standard registration; FL = waived for first set; CA = waived. Disabled Veteran plates are typically FREE in all states.

Step 4: Many states offer additional perks

Veteran plates often unlock: free state park entry (TX, FL, etc.), discount at state-park camping, free or discounted bridge/highway tolls (NJ, MD, etc.), parking privileges (Disabled Veteran plates), license plate transfer to surviving spouse upon veteran's death (varies). Check your state-specific perks at warriorsfund.org/state/{your-state}.

Critical tips

  • Your CVSO can help you assemble the documentation if your DD-214 is unclear or missing the relevant entries.
  • Disabled Veteran plates with disability rating ≥50% often unlock free state park entry + parking privileges. Worth applying even if you don't plan to use the plates often.
  • License plate fees are NOT a federal benefit — every state sets its own rules. Adjacent states can differ dramatically.
  • Some states allow personalized text on veteran plates (subject to standard license-plate text rules).
