What your year-end gift funds

  • $50 funds a care package for a hospitalized veteran
  • $250 helps fund emergency-aid grants in the next cycle
  • $1,200 helps fund the next emergency-aid grant cycle
  • $2,500 fully funds one housing down-payment grant

Why December matters for veteran giving

December is when most donors finalize their giving and when employers, brokerages and donor-advised-fund sponsors close their books. A gift scheduled in the first half of the month avoids the last-week crunch: bank bill-pay checks that arrive in January, stock transfers that complete after the 31st, and DAF grants queued behind a sponsor cutoff. Whatever the method, make the recipient unmistakable — payee "Wounded Warriors", EIN 86-1336741 — so a year-end gift is never delayed by a similar-name mix-up.

About year-end giving

A charitable gift is deductible in the tax year it is made, and the IRS counts each giving method differently (Publication 526, "When To Deduct"): a check counts in the year you mail it, a credit-card gift in the year the charge is made even if you pay the bill later, a gift of stock or other securities on the date the transfer to the charity is completed, and a qualified charitable distribution from an IRA when it leaves the IRA. Grants recommended from a donor-advised fund are not a new deduction — the deduction was taken when the fund was funded — but sponsors set December cutoffs for grants they will process before year end.
