I want to use my GI Bill. Which chapter and which school?

For: veteran considering education benefits.

Step-by-step

1

Confirm GI Bill chapter eligibility

Post-9/11 (Ch 33) for post-9/11 service. MGIB (Ch 30) for older-era. VR&E (Ch 31) for service-connected disabled veterans (more generous).

2

Apply for VR&E / Chapter 31 first if 10%+ rated

VR&E is more generous than GI Bill but more restrictive eligibility. If you qualify, consider it before burning Chapter 33.

3

Apply for GI Bill education benefits (Chapter 33 or 30)

Standard application form.

4

Verify school participation (yellow ribbon, GI Bill comparison tool)

BAH varies by location. Yellow Ribbon schools cover the gap for high-tuition private programs.

5

Use VR&E Chapter 31 advantages (housing + extended duration)

VR&E often pays more in housing allowance and can extend up to 48 months.
